The SF Giants did it again. They have played six games at Oracle Park this season and have won three of them in walk-off fashion. Mike Yastrzemski had the coolest one yet with a splash hit into McCovey Cove to give the Giants the win.
Not only that, but his daughter Quinley apparently played a role in manifesting her father's splash hit. She asked him to hit a home run a few days ago and Yastrzemski delivered, hitting an impressive opposite-field three-run homer which helped power San Francisco to a victory.
She apparently also asked him to deliver a splash hit for her and Yastrzemski gave her one in the coolest way possible: a walk-off splash hit to give the Giants an 8-6 victory and cap off an incredible comeback against the Reds when they were trailing by five runs at one point were and looking like they were going to be swept in ugly fashion after getting shut out in the first two games of the series.
Mike Yastrzemski's daughter helps the SF Giants get another win
It was an awesome moment and it is not the first time Yastrzemski has deposited a ball into San Francisco Bay to end a game. This is the third time that the veteran right fielder has ended a game with a ball into the water. The only other two Giants to ever do it are Brandon Crawford back in 2014 and Barry Bonds back in 2003.
That is pretty impressive that Yastrzemski now has a three game-ending splash hits. One could make an argument there is no cooler way to end a baseball game than by launching a home run into a body of water, so it is awesome that Yastrzemski has been able to experience that three times now.
After the game, the 34-year-old said, "This is about as much fun as I've ever had on the baseball field right now." He was not just talking about the splash hit, though. He said that even when San Francisco got shut out in the first two games of the series against the Reds the team remained positive. That speaks to the seeming shift in the culture of the team this year where they feel more unified and like there is greater overall team chemistry.
Comeback wins like the one on Wednesday can reveal a lot about a team. It would have been easy for the Giants to have just rolled over and died when things looked bleak. Instead, they fought and clawed their way back into the game and Yastrzemski was able to send everyone home happy.
Let's just hope Quinley can manifest some more magical moments this season as she is already off to a red-hot start to begin the year.
