Mike Krukow decrying 'disgusting' brand of SF Giants baseball makes his retirement hurt even more

This is not the way things should end.

At times it feels like we have run out of words to describe how bad this season has gone for the SF Giants. As someone who typically writes three to five articles per day about the Giants, I find myself struggling to find new ways to articulate the levels of incompetence this team has reached.

Thankfully, broadcaster Mike Krukow always seems to find the perfect words for every occasion and he summed up San Francisco’s current brand of baseball perfectly in a recent KNBR appearance.

He spoke about Sunday’s dispiriting loss against the Colorado Rockies, a game that manager Tony Vitello had harsh words for, and said, “People are paying to see this brand of baseball. And that’s disgusting… Their concentration is out the door. You still have to have pride when you go out there and put that uniform on.”

That one word sums up the season pretty well: disgusting. Krukow knows a thing or two about disgusting seasons because he was a member of the 1985 Giants team that had a record of 62-100, the worst record in the history of the franchise since moving to San Francisco.

He knows what it means to go out and play for a team that is probably going to lose and that’s exactly what we are seeing right now from the Giants. They appear to be a lifeless group for the most part and there’s a legitimate chance they could tie or break that 1985 record.

What makes this all even worse is the fact that Krukow is going to be retiring after this season. One hopes it’s not a permanent retirement, but he is going to be stepping away and we will not get to hear his voice as often going forward which is hard enough.

Mike Krukow deserves a better send off than the 2026 Giants

One would have hoped that his final season where he was still one of the main broadcasters for the Giants would have been a little more entertaining. A World Series run was probably too much to ask for, but how nice would it have been if the Giants made the playoffs and at least made a little run as a fitting send off to Krukow?

Instead, the Giants will send him off with this stinker of a year. Fittingly, Krukow’s final game will come on September 27 when the Giants take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. The last time the Giants were this bad was back in 2018 and 2019 and the Giants had emotional goodbyes on the last day of each season. Hunter Pence got his going away scooter to end the 2018 season and Bruce Bochy got his big send off at the end of 2019.

The Giants got crushed by the Dodgers 15-0 to end the 2018 season and then got killed 9-0 to end the following year. Expect a similar rout in Krukow’s final game which won’t be a fitting way to end his broadcast career, but will absolutely be a fitting way to end a 2026 season that’s been very disgusting indeed.
