It’s been an embarrassing year for the SF Giants with so many tough losses that they all sort of blend together. Everyone has known this season has been a wash for quite a while, but it seems that manager Tony Vitello felt Sunday’s loss to the Colorado Rockies was a breaking point of sorts.

Addressing the media after the game, he said that he had a team meeting to address the lack of clean baseball that’s been played as of late, which really could apply to the entire season, and added: “I mean, people paid money to sit through that. [Ron] Washington's got to sit through that. And so might as well sit through a meeting.”

Of all the games to note that fans had to sit through it all, Sunday’s was actually relatively entertaining by the standards of the 2026 Giants. Rafael Devers hit a very impressive three-run home run into McCovey Cove, rookie Turner Hill got his first big league hit, and the team scored seven runs in total. There are plenty of other games that stand out for a lack of offense or just general ineptitude but the fact that the Giants walked so many batters and gave so many gifts on the pitching side is probably what forced Vitello to call a meeting.

Even though everyone knows Vitello’s job is safe, Buster Posey said as much recently, that doesn’t mean he’s done excellent work in his first year as a big league manager. The learning curve has been steep and obvious for all to see. The mistakes, especially the mental or fundamental ones that we’ve seen repeatedly this year either defensively or on the base paths, reflect very poorly on Vitello and his staff.

In any other year, Vitello would probably be gone. But Posey stuck his neck out to bring this unproven entity into the fold and to give up on him after one season, no matter how lousy it’s been, would undermine his credibility perhaps irreparably.

Giants need to change their goals the rest of this season

At least Sunday showed us all he knows how unacceptable the product on the field is. In his defense, the Giants are essentially trotting out guys who would be in the minors right now had their main players remained healthy or if they were anywhere near contention so winning baseball is not exactly a realistic expectation right now.

Clean baseball is not an unreasonable expectation though. The Giants should have a goal to have fewer walks and fewer errors than their opponent in every game the rest of this season. That's a slightly more attainable goal than focusing on wins and losses.

For anyone who has watched this team a lot this year though, even that seems like a Herculean task. Vitello knows that himself but maybe his team meeting will wake the team up just a bit and at least inspire some sounder baseball in the last six weeks of the season.
