Former SF Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has reportedly rejoined the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Look out for him to try and poach some former Giants, and Dodgers, in his role as special advisor.
A reporter for The Athletic broke the news on social media. Reporting earlier in the offseason made it seem like Zaidi returning to the Dodgers was a real possibility, but now it appears to be very close to official.
Farhan Zaidi could poach these former SF Giants in new role with Dodgers
Zaidi's reported title will be "special advisor" which is vague enough that it could encompass many things. Who knows how involved he will actually be in the day-to-day operations of the front office, but if he has a say in what players the Dodgers should get you know he is going to love trying to pick guys up on the cheap which he has made a habit of doing throughout his career, whether it be in Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Francisco.
If he is perusing the list of available free agents out there, there are several names who could make sense for Zaidi to recommend the Dodgers go after.
In terms of starting pitchers, Alex Wood and Ross Stripling are still available in free agency. Zaidi acquired them both in Los Angeles and they had some solid seasons with the Dodgers. Eventually, Zaidi signed them both in San Francisco which ended up being two of his poorer decisions as the head of the front office.
It would be a very low-risk move for the Dodgers to sign them to minor-league contracts and extend them an invite to spring training where they could try and fight for a roster spot. Both struggled mightily as members of the Athletics last season, but we know Zaidi loves a good reclamation project.
Another pitcher to watch out for is former Giant and Dodger Scott Alexander. Our own Jeff Young recently made the case for why the Giants should bring back Alexander given their need for a left-handed reliever, but an Alexander reunion with the Dodgers seems just as likely. Last season with the A's, Alexander had an ERA of 2.56 in 45 appearances so he is still an effective reliever.
Zaidi returning to the Dodgers is a fairly unsurprising development. It will be interesting to see what role he plays in the organization and how involved he is in personnel decisions. One positive to look at is that the Dodgers never won a World Series with Zaidi as their general manager, so perhaps he can be their anti-good luck charm and prevent them from winnings any more championships.
