Longtime manager Bruce Bochy recently added yet another notch to his Hall of Fame legacy. He tied and surpassed another SF Giants manager, Dusty Baker, on the all-time wins list.
Longtime SF Giants manager Bruce Bochy recently added yet another notch to his career résumé
Baker finished his Hall of Fame career after the 2023 season, ending a four-year run as the Houston Astros' skipper. After five managerial gigs, the baseball lifer decided to retire from the dugout. He was finally able to get that World Series ring with the Astros in 2022.
He finished his historic career with 2,183 career wins, including 840 wins with the Giants. Incredibly, there have been five managers to surpass the 2,000-win mark this century, two of which managed the Giants for extended runs.
There was a 27-year stretch where the Giants were managed by either Baker or Bochy, with a four-year run by Felipe Alou sandwiched in between.
On April 17, the Rangers registered a 5-3 win against the Los Angeles Angels, tying Bochy and Baker on the all-time managerial wins list for a brief moment in time. Bochy surpassed Baker last Saturday in a walk-off 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a team he had faced off against a million times before, due to managing an NL West dugout for 25 seasons with the San Diego Padres and Giants.
The veteran skipper now sits alone at No. 7 on the all-time wins list. He will not be in that position for long, as Sparky Anderson is the next manager on the list at 2,194 career wins. Incredibly, Anderson managed for 26 seasons, with his final season coming as the Detroit Tigers' manager in 1995. That turned out to be Bochy's first season at the helm of the Padres.
If Bochy is planning to continue the climb, it might take a while. Joe Torre (2,326 caeer wins) and Bobby Cox (2,504 career wins) are next on the all-time wins list.
The longtime Giants manager just started his 28th season at the head of an MLB dugout. He also just turned 70, and is in the final year of a three-year contract.
There has been no sign that Bochy is planning to step away after this season. Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young has longstanding ties with Bochy and has indicated that it is the veteran manager's call on what happens next. The Rangers are off to a solid start, and if they continue to see success, it would be hard to envision Bochy walking away from that at the end of this season.
