SF Giants ace Logan Webb is participating in the World Baseball Classic soon. While it is a cool opportunity for him, naturally there is some fear amongst fans that his participation could mess up his usual routine and potentially even expose him to an injury. Webb tried to put those fears to rest recently.
Appearing on the Foul Territory program, Webb said of fans,"I don't think they understand it's only seven games." He also said that he has gotten some flak from fans for starting two games but he made clear that the plan is for him to start two games, Paul Skenes to start two games, Joe Ryan to start two games, and Tarik Skubal to start one game.
SF Giants ace Logan Webb clears up confusion about WBC participation
Skubal has been criticized a bit for starting just one game since some see it as a decision focused more on his looming free agency rather than doing everything he can to help Team USA win games.
Seemingly no matter what the pitchers decide to do they are going to take heat for it, but Webb's reminder is a useful one for fans worried about his participation.
Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey has been candid about his reservations regarding Webb's participation in the event. He has fears about what intense, adrenaline-filled outings in March might do to a pitcher later in the season.
Webb has been arguably the most reliable and consistent work horse in the league for years now, so if anyone is impervious to the effects of playing in the WBC it is probably him.
There could be some added benefits to his participation as well. Maybe he can put in a good word about San Francisco with a pending free agent like Skubal. It's a long shot that Skubal would sign with the Giants, but it doesn't hurt for Webb to give it a shot.
It's also worth noting that Webb has not pitched in the playoffs since 2021. He delivered two stellar starts in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers and he has to be dying to get back to playing October baseball. Maybe getting a taste of the playoff-like atmosphere provided in the WBC will light a fire under him and inspire him to have his best year yet on the mound.
While it's reasonable to have fears about Webb getting hurt or disrupting his usual preparation for the season, he does not seem to be worried so let's hope everything goes smoothly.
