SF Giants ace Logan Webb is set to pitch in the World Baseball Classic in March. Team USA has a lot of impressive arms on its pitching staff so maybe Webb could put in a good word about the Giants to try and lure them to San Francisco.
One of the biggest names on Team USA's staff is the two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal. The left-handed ace is only going to pitch once for Team USA to try to avoid injury entering a contract season, but maybe he and Webb can connect while they are together even if it is for a brief time.
Logan Webb can try to talk up the SF Giants at the World Baseball Classic
Webb has said that he's excited to learn from his fellow Team USA teammates, several of whom are Cy Young winners. Webb's too modest to say it, but there are surely some pitchers there who would like to learn a thing or two from him since he's been one of the most consistent pitchers in the game for years.
At the end of the day, the Giants landing a premium ace is going to come down to money. If they offer Skubal the most money when he hits the market next offseason then there is a pretty good chance they will land him.
Yet, we know that the Giants have been reluctant to splurge on an ace free agent pitcher for quite some time now so that seems like more of a pipe dream than anything else right now.
Still, maybe he could put some face time in with Joe Ryan, the San Francisco native who heads the staff in Minnesota. If the Twins have a rough first half and the Giants are in the playoff hunt then maybe the Giants would be able to trade for him.
No matter what, it will be a cool experience for Webb. He may not have the same name recognition as someone like Skubal or Paul Skenes, but his peers surely respect what he does on the mound.
Giants fans are really just hoping that he does not injure himself or in any way negatively impact his regular season. If he went down the Giants would be in really big trouble.
Webb looked great in his first spring training action so it seems like he's on track for another great year, but maybe he can do some recruiting while he is at the WBC.
