Logan Webb takes home 2026 Willie Mac Award for the SF Giants

Before Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the SF Giants held the annual Willie Mac Award ceremony to honor Logan Webb as this year's recipient. He became the first starting pitcher to win the award since Madison Bumgarner in 2014.

The award is voted on by teammates, coaches, trainers, and fans. The Giants began handing out the award in 1980. Jack Clark was the first recipient, and it is to honor the career of the late Willie McCovey. The award is presented to the most inspirational player on the roster, both on and off the field.

Of course, Webb has been a leader in the Giants clubhouse for years. He is the longest-tenured player and has been the ace of the rotation.

Durability is a trait that not many pitchers display in today's game, as pitchers make fewer starts. A full workload is different today compared to even 15 years ago. That said, Webb takes the ball every fifth day and has been among the most durable starting pitchers in baseball in this decade.

In addition to his leadership in the clubhouse, the 29-year-old pitcher has been an active leader in the community. He was recently recognized as the Giants' nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, which is presented to the player who serves as an ambassador of the game through community involvement and philanthropy.

There is one player nominated from each team. Webb was recognized for his many contributions to the community, including his advocacy against substance abuse. He has turned a personal tragedy into a campaign to prevent families from experiencing a similar loss.

Webb is also an excellent performer on the mound. He earned his third NL All-Star nomination this year, and has received Cy Young votes in each of the past four seasons. This includes a second-place finish in 2023. Blake Snell beat him out for the award that year.

This year, the veteran pitcher posted a 4.31 ERA in 27 starts. He battled a knee ailment earlier in the year and has been dealing with a finger blister that has shut him down for the remainder of this season.

Plenty of former recipients attended the Willie Mac Award ceremony on Friday night. Matt Chapman and Willy Adames have taken home the award in recent seasons.
