Logan Webb's All-Star nod made even less sense after Dave Roberts' usage

Why was he on the team?

It was a bit of a surprise when SF Giants ace Logan Webb made the 2026 National League All-Star team. While he was dominant in the month of June and was arguably the best pitcher in baseball, outside of that month he has not looked like his usual self.

Still, he got the nod and we knew going into the game that Webb probably wouldn’t pitch at all for the National League squad but the fact that he did not pitch makes one wonder why he made the team at all if manager Dave Roberts was not going to use him.

The assumption was that Webb could come in fairly early in the game and eat up an inning or two to pave the way to some of the bullpen arms, but that was not the case. Maybe Webb just wasn’t feeling one hundred percent healthy or he felt he needed a bit of a rest after he spent some time on the IL in the first half of the season. No matter what, it was just a bit off to have him on the team if he didn’t end up being utilized at all.

Is there any world in which the Giants trade Webb?

Perhaps that’s for the best of all parties involved though. While the Giants have said publicly they have no interest in trading Webb, these next few weeks could determine a lot. If the Giants play good baseball and show some signs of life then maybe the front office will feel more comfortable holding onto core pieces while dealing away obvious trade chips like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray.

But if San Francisco comes out of the gates incredibly slow and limps into the deadline like it did last season, then that could change the team’s calculus on who is untouchable.

If the Giants were open to dealing everyone, they’d be able to get a pretty nice haul for Webb. A lot of teams would die for an ace pitcher who is on a team-friendly deal for a few more seasons. Webb raised some eyebrows by changing his profile picture on social media so maybe there’s some small part of him that wouldn’t mind being dealt.

His lack of usage in the All-Star Game was strange but if he pitches well in the coming weeks and the Giants struggle there is a chance, however small, he could be dealt to a contender.
