The SF Giants have been playing good baseball to start the 2025 season. It is early, but something feels different about this team and Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow believes it has everything to do with Buster Posey.
In an interview on Tim Kawakami's podcast, Krukow said that Posey has brought back positive vibes to the organization. Krukow went on to say that he was talking talking to some of the players recently and, "one of the players was walking off of the field, going into the dugout after batting practice and I said, 'You look like you’re having fun,' and he goes, 'We’re playing baseball again,' with a big smile.”
Krukow made sure to preface that by saying Farhan Zaidi did a lot of positive things for the organization, but that comment from the unnamed player could be interpreted as a sort of backhanded comment at the previous regime. At times it did feel like the Giants got away from playing baseball the last few seasons. While analytics are an important part of the modern game, it felt like things became a bit imbalanced in the analytical direction at the expense of feel and doing the little things right in order to win ballgames.
Ever since Posey became the president of baseball operations for the team after last season, he has set out to give the Giants a clear identity. This identity mirrors the one the tem had in the early 2010's when Posey was a star player for the team, leading them to three World Series titles in five years. He was an absolute force for the team on the field, and now he is trying to have that same impact from the front office.
While there was not a clear identity for the team for much of the Farhan Zaidi era, Posey has tried to instill a return to the fundamentals with an emphasis on strong pitching, sound defense, and situational hitting.
For the most part, the Giants have followed through on that vision early in the year which is a very positive sign. It is clear that players have bought into this vision as well with star players like Logan Webb echoing Posey's sentiments.
Posey has also been unafraid to challenge the team to be great through symbolic acts. The team moved their three World Series titles from the 2010's into the clubhouse so they are on full display for the players. It is a not-so-subtle reminder that a World Series title is the end goal and that egos need to be checked at the door in pursuit of that goal.
Krukow's comments just reinforce what everyone has felt about this Giants team since the start of spring training: things are different in a very good way. That does not mean there won't be struggles or bumps in the road, but it just seems like this organization has a better energy and vibe to it with Posey at the helm.
