Jung Hoo Lee plans to call upon former SF Giants teammate to help with move to RF

Not a bad plan at all.

While it would be easy for SF Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee to view his shift to right field as something of a demotion, he has taken the move in stride. He has also said he plans to reach out to his former teammate Mike Yastrzemski for some pointers on how to play right field.

Speaking with reporters in camp, Lee said, "I’ll for sure give Yaz a call in a couple weeks and ask him about right field."

While Yastrzemski is now with the Atlanta Braves, he has more knowledge than any current player on how to play right field at Oracle Park. He was a fixture out there during his long tenure in San Francisco so Lee is smart to seek his advice on playing the position.

The two former teammates have a close relationship and Lee shared that he was emotional when the Giants traded Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline last year.

Yastrzemski may not be the only former Giants outfielder who Lee picks the brain of this offseason. Former Giants Hunter Pence and Gregor Blanco are expected to be guest instructors in camp and they have a ton of knowledge on how to handle the 24-foot-tall wall in right field and the other intricacies of that position.

Those two guys are responsible for arguably the two best defensive plays ever made in right field at Oracle Park as Blanco made an amazing diving catch in Triple's Alley to preserve Matt Cain's perfect game and Pence made an insane grab against the chain-link fence out there during the 2014 NLDS.

Pence and Yastrzemski even discussed playing right field in a 20-minute video posted to the team's YouTube so it may not be the worst idea for Lee to check that out as well.

By all accounts, Lee has been an absolute professional with this position change and has taken it in stride. It seemed inevitable that a shift to one of the corner spots would occur at some point in his career, but the addition of center fielder Harrison Bader accelerated that process.

Lee graded out as one of the worst defensive center fielders in MLB last season so the move to right should improve the team's outfield defense as a whole. It may take some time to get used to his new home, but reaching out to Yastrzemski is a wise move as he tries to acclimate.
