While 2025 was most likely the last year in a SF Giants uniform for Wilmer Flores, at least as a player, it sounds like the fan favorite has no plans on retiring. The 13-year veteran said he still has a lot to give so maybe a team will take a chance on him.
Flores appeared on MLB Network to talk about how he has been training in the offseason and getting ready in case a team calls to give him a chance.
SF Giants fan favorite Wilmer Flores is not planning to retire
Last season, Flores had a bounce back campaign as he slashed .241/.307/.379 with 16 home runs and 71 runs batted in. He carried the team's offense at times early in the year and delivered some clutch hits as he turned out to be a very strong designated hitter for the club.
After the Giants acquired Rafael Devers, Flores saw his playing time go down. His numbers went down as well which was to be expected to some extent as he may have worn down as the season progressed and was not getting a lot of regular at-bats.
The Giants were at least nice enough to give him a moment in the final game of the season where fans could acknowledge everything he had done while he was a Giant. He received a well-earned round of applause as he was pulled from the game.
Flores was not part of a World Series team and the only playoff team he was part of with the Giants was in 2021. He played a key role on that team and unfortunately was infamously rung up on a check swing call in Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But he still endeared himself to fans with his personality and his play on the field. Seemingly everywhere he goes he gains fans as many New York Mets fans still have a soft spot for him even though it has been years since he donned a Mets uniform.
While it may take time for Flores to find a team, he showed enough to at least earn a non-roster invite to spring training next season. Perhaps he could get hot and earn himself a bench role on a team in need of some depth at first base.
It is nice to see Flores still plugging along and he should not be counted out because many figured he was done after a rough 2024 campaign hampered by injury and he came out and had a respectable year in 2025. Perhaps he can do the same in 2026.
