The last time the SF Giants seemed like they had hit rock bottom this season was in early May which led to the team calling up Bryce Eldridge and Jesus Rodriguez. Now, just a few weeks later, it feels like the Giants have reached yet a new low by getting swept in Arizona to fall to 20-30 on the season.
It may be time for the Giants to shake things up yet again by calling up Victor Bericoto who is swinging a very hot bat in Triple-A Sacramento. Bericoto is hitting .299/.355/.449 with six home runs and 30 runs driven in. He recently had a two-homer game and has been one of the best hitters for the River Cats all season.

This success hasn’t come out of nowhere. Last season in the minors across multiple levels he hit .271/.343/.448 with 15 home runs and 65 runs batted in. Then, this year in spring training Bericoto was really impressive as he hit .419/.422/.698 with three home runs and 14 runs batted in. He won the Barney Nugent Award which typically goes to the young Giants player who impressed the most with their play in spring training.
Bericoto can play first base and the corner outfield spots. He’s sort of like a younger version of Jerar Encarnacion which may not be the best way to advertise him to fans, but if he can hit better than Encarnacion in the big leagues he should shake that comparison pretty quickly.
San Francisco signed Bericoto back in 2018 as an international free agent out of Venezuela. While many of the team’s international free agents have not panned out all that well, i.e. Marco Luciano and Luis Matos, maybe they are due for one of them to break through at the big league level.
Bericoto could easily replace one of the weak links on San Francisco's roster
Bericoto is not in the 40-man roster so the Giants would have to make a corresponding move if they wanted to add him to the team. Getting rid of Will Brennan would probably make the most sense. Having both Brennan and Drew Gilbert on the roster feels redundant and doesn’t make much sense at all.
It’s still sort of early in the season, but the Giants are quickly reaching a point where the playoffs are no longer a realistic goal on the year. Once that point is reached this season should be about playing young guys and figuring out if they have any special talent.
It’s never fun when a team is out of contention, but at least it can provide an opportunity for a team to think about its future more seriously. Bericoto could be part of that future in some capacity so it’s time to call him up and give him some opportunities.Â
