It’s about time SF Giants call up hot-hitting outfielder from Triple-A

It’s a lost season for the SF Giants at this point, but they might as well get their younger players some opportunities. That is why there is no reason they shouldn’t call up outfielder Jonah Cox who is tearing the cover off the ball in Triple-A right now.

Since starting a rehab assignment with the Sacramento River Cats after working his way back from an oblique strain that kept him out for a while, he has hit .468/.519/.660 with one home run, seven runs batted in, and seven stolen bases in 11 games. It feels like it’s time to call him up and give him some runway the rest of this season.

It’s a little puzzling why he hasn’t been called up yet. Victor Bericoto was just called back up after a shorter rehab stint so it would seem like Cox is a natural candidate to get called up.

He had seven hits in 26 at-bats after he got called up to the big leagues straight from Double-A earlier this season. Some of those hits came against position players in blowouts and he did look a bit outmatched against actual big league pitchers at times so maybe they just want him to find his swing a bit more.

He seems to have found it though, and his speed and defense makes him a huge asset even if the bat may need a bit more time to thrive at the big league level.

Perhaps the Giants aren’t sure who to demote or DFA in order to make room for him on the roster. Buddy Kennedy seems like an obvious choice. He has yet to record a hit with the Giants this year in two separate stints so it’s probably time to pull the plug.

Giants can use Jonah Cox in a versatile role

If the Giants are worried about not having enough infielders especially with Willy Adames’ health situation, Cox proved earlier in the year he can play second base and Ron Washington could probably get a sack of potatoes to pick it pretty good.

Cox is obviously going to be a bigger part of San Francisco’s future than Buddy Kennedy so it seems like a no-brainer. It’s not hard to imagine a world next season where there’s a platoon in center field with Drew Gilbert and Cox. Both play good defense and have speed and Gilbert hits pretty well against righties while Cox would probably do better against lefties.

It’s just important to get him some reps, so the Giants need to call him up soon because he’s hot in Triple-A and every at-bat he gets at the big league level will help him going forward.
