It is truly puzzling how journeyman infielder remains on SF Giants' roster

Everyone has that bad habit they can’t quit. For me, it’s eating chocolate. For others it might be candy or soda or biting their nails. For whatever reason, the SF Giants seemingly cannot quit journeyman infielder Buddy Kennedy this season.

The 27-year-old has had not one, but two stints with the Giants this year and he has not done anything worthy of note. He’s yet to record a hit as of this writing in 18 at-bats with San Francisco and in his brief stint with the Seattle Mariners he had one hit in 10 at-bats.

This is a year after Kennedy had a slash line of .069/.156/.103 in 32 plate appearances with three different teams. He has played for seven different big league teams since 2022. For whatever reason he keeps on getting chances and he just has not taken advantage of them.

On Friday the Giants decided to call up outfielders Jonah Cox and Turner Hill. They sent down Grant McCray and Nate Furman. Demoting McCray makes sense since he was struggling, but the decision to send Furman down when he only had eight plate appearances rather than DFA Kennedy just does not make any sense.

Giants need to give other players a chance over Buddy Kennedy

Kennedy is not going to have a future with the Giants. The infield is already spoken for and he hasn’t done anything to suggest that he brings anything unique to the table as a bench piece. He’s not especially quick, although we cannot be certain since we haven't seen him run the bases much, and clearly the bat isn’t much of an asset.

Furman is not necessarily going to be a future piece of the team. Christian Koss and Osleivis Basabe seem to be ahead of him on the depth chart for now but they might as well get a look at him in a lost season like this one.

Furman has hit .284/.370/.405 in Triple-A Sacramento this year. That’s not exceptional but he’s just 25 years old and this is the exact sort of season to give him some chances. Guys are banged up. The team is terrible. Why not start him at second base? They could easily move Basabe to shortstop or third base or they could even put Furman at third.

It just does not make a lot of sense why they are continuing to give Kennedy chances at this point. Maybe his days are numbered on the roster and the Giants will cut him soon and call up Parks Harber, even though that could be complicated, or someone else from Triple-A, but every at-bat Kennedy gets just feels like a bit of a waste at this point.
