It is well documented that the SF Giants have not had a hitter hit 30 home runs in a season since Barry Bonds. That is why it is no surprise the last Giant to compete in the Home Run Derby was the Home Run King back in 2004.
Bonds was not victorious in 2004 as Miguel Tejada ended up taking home the crown. Yet, there was still a hilarious moment at the beginning of the first round as the pitcher throwing to Barry threw him an intentional ball to start, a nice sign of respect given that teams would intentionally walk Barry all the time.
Last SF Giants Home Run Derby participant was Barry Bonds
Bonds hit some absolute bombs in the first round, but he was unable to make it out of the second round that year.
Bonds competed in the Derby five different times as a Giant: in 1993, 1996, 2001, 2002, and 2004. The only time he won was in 1996 when he went toe to toe with Mark McGwire and emerged victorious.
The only other Giants to ever compete in the Home Run Derby are Kevin Mitchell back in 1989 and Matt Williams in 1990. It is remarkable that the Giants have had so few players compete, but perhaps things could change soon.
Just last season, first-time All-Star Heliot Ramos said that he would love to compete in the Home Run Derby someday. While he was snubbed from this year's All-Star team, if he makes a future team and can get close to 20 homers in the first half then he could have a legitimate case to participate.
Another candidate to participate in the future could be Rafael Devers. Even though Devers is in the midst of a slump and could probably benefit from some time off, he has proven that he is a consistent power hitter in his career.
The Giants have him under contract through 2033, so the hope is he can make at least a few All-Star teams in that time and maybe break the drought of Home Run Derby participants. And why not break the 30-homer season drought while he is at it?
As things stand, it is probably for the best that no Giants position players will be at the All-Star festivities. With how bad the offense has been at times in the first half, Giants hitters need to rest up and regroup as the team tries to make a playoff push in the second half.
The Home Run Derby will take place tonight at 8:00 PM EST.
