How every player SF Giants acquired at trade deadline has performed so far

The SF Giants got a lot of intriguing young players at the trade deadline last week. We recently took a look at how every player the Giants traded away has fared so far, but it’s worth checking in on how all the players the Giants acquired are doing.

It’s only been a week so there’s no need to overreact to such a small sample size, but some of these guys could be a big part of the big league team someday so every rep they take and opportunity they get matters.

How the 8 players the SF Giants got at the trade deadline are doing so far

Anthony Molina

The Giants traded Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Anthony Molina. He has a career 6.89 ERA in 55 big league appearances. His first outing with the Sacramento River Cats went quite well though as he pitched three scoreless innings and struck out four batters. It may not be a bad idea to get him a look at some point this season.

Ramon Marquez

One of the more exciting prospects the Giants got at the deadline was right-handed starter Ramon Marquez in the Luis Arraez trade with the Philadelphia Phillies. He’s just 20 years old but is considered a top-10 prospect for San Francisco now. His first start with the High-A Eugene Emeralds was a bit shaky as he allowed four earned runs in four innings of work, but he struck out eight and only walked one which is encouraging. He’s definitely a guy to keep an eye on.

Marty Gair

The other player the Giants got in that trade with the Phillies was right-handed pitcher Marty Gair. He’s had two outings with Eugene and has allowed one run while striking out four. He could be a sneaky get if he proves he can be an effective bullpen arm in the minors.

Miguel Mendez

Acquired from the San Diego Padres in the Robbie Ray deal, Miguel Mendez is a high-powered arm whose fastball can touch 100 miles per hour. He’s yet to appear in a game with the Emeralds due to an injury but one hopes he can make his organizational debut with the Giants before the end of the year.

Joniel Hernandez

The other player the Giants got in that deal was 17-year-old shortstop Joniel Hernandez. In six games with the Giants in the Dominican Summer League he’s hit .222/.391/.444 with one homer. He’s got a lot of upside, as some have even dubbed him a "demon," and impressive tools so it will be interesting to see how he progresses.

Henry Lalane

While Heliot Ramos has struggled since the Giants traded him to the New York Yankees, one of the guys they got in return has looked pretty good. Tall lefty Henry Lalane went 4 and 2/3 innings with the Emeralds in his debut and allowed one earned run while striking out five and walking one. He has a high-powered arm and is definitely a guy to watch. He’s certainly not hard to miss at 6-foot-7.

Kaeden Kent

The other player the Giants got from the Yankees was infielder Kaeden Kent, the son of Hall of Fame second baseman Jeff Kent. The younger Kent has yet to appear for the Giants due to injury, but he was hitting .302/.359/.433 with six homers and 43 RBI prior to the trade so maybe he can turn into a solid contact bat for San Francisco.

Marcelo Mayer

The Giants got Mayer from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Erik Miller and Carlos Gutierrez. He was just a top prospect a year or two ago so even though things didn’t work out in Boston maybe he can turn it around back in his native California.

He’s about to start a rehab assignment and if that goes well there’s no reason he shouldn’t be with the big league team at some point this year where he should get a lot of opportunities.

It’s early, but there’s a lot of promise with this bunch. They’ve helped strengthen San Francisco’s farm system and one day will hopefully help out the big league club.
