He showed he is skilled in all facets of the game.

The SF Giants got a pleasant surprise in 2025 in the form of outfielder Grant McCray. The rookie had some impressive moments that could set him up to snag a roster spot in 2025 if he is able to build upon his successes.

When McCray was called up this past season, I felt it represented an act of desperation by the Giants. Their offense was moribund and they were rushing up a rookie the same way that they rushed up Wade Meckler in 2023. I was wrong about that. McCray did not set the world aflame, but he did much better than Meckler did in 2023.

He flashed impressive power in 124 at-bats, blasting 5 home runs including some that went a very long way. His profile suggested he was a bit more of a speed and contact hitter when he was called up so that surprise power was great to see.

His overall numbers left a lot to be desired as he hit .202/.238/.379 and struck out a whopping 56 times compared to just 6 walks. He is simply going to have to make more contact and be a bit more disciplined at the plate if he wants to stick at the big league level.

But he made up for some of his offensive deficiencies with his speed and defense. He stole 5 bases for the team which was huge on a team that lacked reliable speed. He also looked very comfortable out in center field and seems like he would be solid at all three outfield positions.

It is for those reasons more than anything else why he could be a valuable bench piece for the Giants in 2025. He can be a defensive replacement late in games or can come in as a pinch runner. Speed and defense were two weaknesses on the 2024 Giants so it would not be the worst thing to have a bench player who is strong in those respects. Plus, he is not a complete offensive liability when his time in the order comes around due to his ability to hit the ball out of the park.

If the Giants go into next season with him as their 4th or 5th outfielder that would not be a bad thing as he adds a lot with his overall game that could help the team in 2025.
