The SF Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates have made a habit of making deals with each other in recent memory. There are currently four players who were once in the Giants organization on Pittsburgh's big league roster. Let's see how they are doing.

How 4 former players in SF Giants organization are now faring with Pirates

1. Andrew McCutchen

The Giants swung a trade for outfielder Andrew McCutchen back in 2018 as they were trying to rebound from a disastrous 2017 season. The Giants sent prospects Bryan Reynolds and Kyle Crick to the Pirates in exchange for McCutchen, and even though he had some memorable moments in a Giants uniform, he was traded to the New York Yankees mid-season.

After bouncing around with a few different teams, McCutchen has found his way back home in the last few seasons and has still been a pretty solid player even at the age of 38. In 93 games this season, he is slashing .248/.325/.382 with 10 home runs and 34 runs driven in.

He hit a two-run home run against the Giants last night so he is still making the team pay.

2. Bryan Reynolds

Speaking of Bryan Reynolds, the outfielder is still with Pittsburgh all these years later and has developed into a very solid player. The Giants probably wish they could go back in time and not make that trade for McCutchen.

Reynolds is having a bit of a down season, slashing .232/.290/.375 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI. There has been some speculation that Reynolds could be dealt ahead of the trade deadline, but do not count on a reunion with San Francisco as they are reportedly on his no-trade list.

3. Joey Bart

The Giants dealt former first-round pick Joey Bart to the Pirates last season. With Patrick Bailey established as the team's starting catcher, the Giants felt it was time to move on from Bart who never fully caught on with the Giants.

Bart had a great 2024 season after being traded which earned him a chance to be the team's starting catcher in 2025. Unfortunately, Bart has dealt with injuries again this season, and he is slashing .238/.336/.297 with one homer and 15 RBI on the year.

4. Alexander Canario

Giants fans may remember that outfield prospect Alexander Canario was part of the deal back in 2021 with the Chicago Cubs that landed Kris Bryant. Canario was let go by Chicago earlier this season and he was picked up by the Pirates.

In 56 games this season, Canario is slashing .212/.285/.314 with three homers and 13 runs batted in. The Giants probably do not miss him too much, and it was worth it to give him up to get seemingly the last decent baseball out of Bryant during that improbable 2021 season.

It is interesting to see how many former Giants are now on the Pirates. Who knows, maybe in some weird alternate universe the connections between the two teams could become even greater.
