Hard-throwing SF Giants prospects sneaks into Fangraphs' updated top-100 list

Fangraphs updated its top-100 prospect list following the draft. The SF Giants had five prospects make the cut, including hard-throwing pitcher Keyner Martinez, who came in at No. 90.

Josuar Gonzalez led the way for the Giants contingent at No. 30, followed quickly by Jackson Flora at No. 33. Jhonny Level and Luis Hernández came in at No. 60 and No. 64, respectively.

Gonzalez, Level, and Hernández have appeared on nearly all the top prospect lists within the past few months. Flora is viewed as the No. 62 prospect by Baseball America before he even throws a professional pitch. This is not too surprising, given that he was the No. 4 pick in this year's draft and regarded as the top pitcher in his class.

Gavin Kilen and Bo Davidson have appeared on other lists but were not included in this update. Regardless of the publication, the Giants have a healthy farm system, with four or five of the top prospects in baseball. This also comes after Bryce Eldridge graduated from prospect status.

Keyner Martinez is an interesting inclusion. Before the draft, he was viewed as one of the top picthing prospects in a system that was light on pitching depth. They bolstered that unit in the draft, but Martinez has the stuff to still be considered one of the organization's best prospects.

Eric Longenhagen and Brendan Gawlowski of Fangraphs put Martinez in the No. 3/4 starter category and highlighted why he might be one of the most intriguing pitchers in that group:

""Martinez has a blowup outing or inning often enough to keep him in this tier, but on pure stuff and physicality, he’s arguably the most intriguing arm in the group.""

The right-handed pitcher can be wild at times, but he has some of the best stuff in the organization. He flashes a mid 90's fastball with plenty of carry and armside movement. He pairs that with a low 80's sweeper and an upper 80's changeup. There is not enough velocity separation currently between the fastball and changeup for the offspeed pitch to grade out as a plus pitch, but it can be effective at times. Martinez is also an intense competitor on the mound.

The 21-year-old pitcher has posted a 4.36 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 14.2 K/9, and a 2.81 SO/W rate in 64 frames for the San Jose Giants this season. His strikeout rate is the seventh-highest mark in the minors among pitchers with at least 50 innings completed.
