The trade deadline is coming up in a few weeks and the SF Giants have a number of trade chips teams may be interested in. Out of all of them, the Giants seem very likely to trade away second baseman Luis Arraez.
Even though Arraez has been the best player on the Giants this season and is a worthy All-Star, he is one of San Francisco’s most valuable trade chips right now especially with other teams around the league looking to add a consistent producer to their lineup.
Arraez is hitting .330/.368/.460 on the year with four home runs and 35 runs batted in. He’s walked more times than he has struck out and there’s a good chance he wins his fourth career batting title this season. Teams would absolutely love to have a contact bat like that in the lineup especially come playoffs time.
He’s set to be a free agent after this season and it seems pretty likely that he is going to be dealt. If he does get traded, he has one request: that he go to a team that continues to let him play second base.
Giants may not be able to meet Arraez's trade wish
It’s an understandable request since he’s proven that he can be elite defensive at second base, but from San Francisco’s perspective they are just going to trade him for the best offer available and will let that team figure out a way to work him in at second base.
It would be sad to see Arraez go, but the only way to keep him around would be to trade Matt Chapman, which is highly unlikely to happen, or trade Casey Schmitt which also seems unlikely given the fact he’s in the midst of a breakout season and could easily end the year with 30 home runs.
One hopes Arraez gets his wish and stays at second base but if the Giants do decide to trade him they just have to focus on maximizing the return above all else. They could probably get at least two solid prospects depending on the team they trade him to.
Expect the trade chatter to heat up more and more these next few weeks as the Giants seem certain to send at least a few guys to different teams. Arraez is arguably their best trade chip so they are in a great position to fleece a team desperate for a contact bat.
