While the bullpen the SF Giants stitched together in the offseason has been less than ideal to say the least, at least the team can feel good about moving on from closer Camilo Doval whose struggles with the New York Yankees have reached a new low in what has been a disastrous tenure in the Bronx.

Doval entered New York’s Thursday night game against the Chicago White Sox with the score tied 1-1 in the top of the eighth and the bases loaded with one out. On the very first pitch he threw, Andrew Benintendi hit a grand slam and the White Sox went on to win the game. It was not an ideal situation for Doval to be inserted into but there was a time when the Giants wouldn’t have wanted anyone else out there on the mound in that sort of situation.

That’s why the Yankees gave up Jesus Rodriguez, Parks Harber, Trystan Vierling, and Carlos De La Rosa to get Doval at the trade deadline last year. Unfortunately for the Yankees, it’s been an abject disaster.

Last year after being traded Doval had a 4.82 ERA in 22 appearances. So far this season he has a 5.08 ERA in 32 appearances. The Yankees are getting the bad version of Doval that the Giants experienced in 2024. He was completely out of whack that year and was demoted to Triple-A.

Giants have definitely won the Camilo Doval trade

The Yankees have to be regretting the trade for him while the Giants must be feeling pretty smart. They got Rodriguez who, despite getting sent back down after a brief stint in the big leagues, has promise but needs to refine his defense a bit in the minors. Harber is hitting .286/.370/.500 with eight home runs and 32 runs batted in for Double-A Richmond.

The Giants were smart to sell on Doval when they did. Even though their bullpen has left a lot to be desired this season Doval would not have made it any better if he was pitching the way he has for the Yankees.

It would be hilarious if the Yankees ended up letting Doval go and then the Giants swooped in to pick him up and he somehow turned back into the All-Star version of himself from 2023. It’s highly unlikely but it would be funny to see Yankees fans melt down over that.

Pretty much all of San Francisco’s deals at the deadline look pretty good nearly a year later. With the Giants almost certain to be sellers we’ll have to see what magic the front office can work in 2026.
