The MLB offseason can be slow at times, so we at Around the Foghorn have followed the odyssey of Marco Luciano. He has been waived and claimed so many times that it is hard to keep track, but it seems he has finally settled with the New York Yankees organization.
New York outrighted Luciano to Triple-A which means he will not be on the 40-man roster, but at least it means he has settled with a team for now and will not continue the cycle of getting claimed by a team only to get designated for assignment shortly thereafter.
Former SF Giants prospect Marco Luciano finally settles with Yankees organization
Luciano was extended a non-roster invite to spring training. It seems unlikely that he will be able to make the big league roster, but maybe if he has a solid showing in Florida that could set him up for a promotion somewhere down the road.
To recap for the uninitiated, Luciano was waived by the Giants earlier in the offseason as it was clear there was no future for him in San Francisco. He was claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates and then DFA'd by them, picked up by the Baltimore Orioles before being DFA'd, and then finally the Yankees picked him up before putting him on waivers but he cleared waivers.
It must be a bit jarring for the 24-year-old considering he has been with the Giants since 2018 after signing as an international free agent. The Giants are the only organization he has known but obviously things did not pan out.
Luciano is a cautionary tale for the Giants as they now have two promising young shortstops who were signed as international free agents in Josuar Gonzalez and Luis Hernandez. The Giants with president of baseball operations Buster Posey in charge seem to be taking a more patient approach with moving prospects through the system.
Whether prospects work out or not is anyone's guess, but the Giants have to be hoping they do not have two more Marco Luciano's on their hand.
Luciano at least knows what team he will be with now and where he will be in camp. It's unlikely, but it would be one heck of a story if a hot spring from Luciano coupled with some injuries got him on New York's big league roster for Opening Day which would be against the Giants at Oracle Park on March 25th.
