It has been an odyssey of an offseason for former SF Giants prospect Marco Luciano. He has bounced around from team to team and has been claimed yet again as the New York Yankees scooped him up off waivers.
This all began when the Giants waived Luciano and he was claimed by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Then, the Pirates waived him and he was claimed by the Baltimore Orioles. His time in Baltimore was brief as they put him on waivers and now the Yankees are taking a chance on him.
Ex-SF Giants infielder Marco Luciano claimed by the Yankees
If history is any indication, this will not be Luciano's final stop this offseason. Teams are still making moves and have to adjust their 40-man rosters on the fly so if the Yankees need to clear some space then they will not hesitate to put Luciano back on waivers.
It's a tough situation for Luciano who surely just wants to know what team he will be on going into next season. Surely, he will at the very least land a minor league deal somewhere with an invite to spring training.
He has not done enough at the big league level yet to get any team really excited about him, but there is an allure that comes with being a former top prospect. Other teams out there may think to themselves, "We can fix him," when the reality of that is much more difficult.
Luciano does not have a set position. He was once thought of as a shortstop but after his mishaps at the position in San Francisco he was moved to the outfield where he was not all that strong defensively either.
He still has some power as he hit 20 homers in Triple-A last season, but he is not a complete hitter as his average was too low to think he could utilize his power in the big leagues.
Unfortunately, Luciano's odyssey has been one of the more interesting things for Giants fans to follow this offseason given the team's relative inactivity.
Maybe that will change in the coming weeks, but most of the top free agents are off the board and the Giants are clearly not in a spending mood. Maybe they could make a trade for Nico Hoerner or Brendan Donovan, but for now we will just have to watch and see where Luciano's next destination will be.
