It sure did sound like Farhan Zaidi was going to rejoin the Los Angeles Dodgers according to a report from a couple of weeks ago. However, the former SF Giants front office executive has not made a decision yet and is considering multiple options.
Former SF Giants president of baseball ops still undecided about next move
Zaidi joined the Foul Territory Podcast recently to discuss a number of topics from his Giants tenure as well as what his next move could be. The offseason hot stove has gone cold, so this could whet appetite if you need baseball content.
Host Scott Braun asked Zaidi what his next move will be, bringing up the report about him potentially rejoining the Dodgers organization. Zaidi did confirm that he has talked with the Dodgers but added that he has spoken with other teams as well. He admitted that he is still trying to figure out what to do next.
Zaidi's tenure with San Francisco came to an end after the 2024 season concluded. The Giants put together three straight disappointing seasons following a historic year in 2021 when they set a franchise record with 107 wins.
The past three seasons have been difficult for many Giants fans to watch. The disappointing results and high roster turnover were two of the biggest factors. While Zaidi could not necessarily control how the team always performed on the field, he was in control of the roster.
For what it is worth, the subpar records were not from a lack of trying. The Giants did invest heavily in the rosters, especially in the past two seasons. They crossed the Competitive Balance Tax (CBT) threshold of $237 million in 2024 but did not get a return on investment in terms of producing a better record.
As Zaidi indicates in his interview, the Giants did try to land some of the biggest names in free agency. However, when they missed, they pivoted to less exciting options. Perhaps, that is the defining quality of his tenure with San Francisco.
On a similarly important note, the Giants were unable to markedly improve the farm system during Zaidi's tenure. As is the case with every team, they did find some successes in the draft. However, those successes were few and far between. That narrative could change down the road, but at this point, there were too many misses with their high picks.
Zaidi has a long track record in baseball. He got his career started with the Oakland A's then he was hired away by the Dodgers to serve as a general manager and spent the past six seasons with the Giants. Zaidi remains well respected throughout baseball even if his stint with the Giants did not go as planned and should find a new role soon enough.
