The SF Giants have been connected to potential ace pitcher Roki Sasaki, but a former MLB executive bluntly stated that the Giants do not make sense for Sasaki, "based on their weak farm system and mediocre major-league roster." Is he right?

Bowden's full piece can be read in The Athletic here (subscription required). Now, it is fair to wonder why Bowden is now only writing about baseball and is no longer in charge of making front office decisions. However, he may have a little bit of a point on the current state of the Giants.

If Sasaki wants to go to a proven winner, the Giants are not his team. They have played .500 baseball for the last three seasons and while they have shown brief flashes of being a team capable of contending, they have simply been unable to do so consistently.

One could argue the Matt Chapman extension and Willy Adames signing makes the Giants look a little bit more like a potential playoff team, but it seems like they are still a few pieces away especially when they are playing in such a crowded NL West division.

If Sasaki wants to go to a team that is not a big contender now, but in a few years should be looking good because they have some exciting prospects coming down the pipeline...he probably still would not join the Giants.

To be fair, the Giants do have top prospect Bryce Eldridge who could potentially be called up to the major leagues at some point in 2025. However, they do not have too many prospects after that to be super excited about at least right now.

The Giants do have promising young players like Heliot Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee, Tyler Fitzgerald, and Patrick Bailey who could solidify into a solid core for the team. Yet, none of those players seems to have superstar potential so the Giants may still be looking for that star player to help get them over the top.

Who knows, though? Maybe Sasaki wants to be on the West Coast but does not want all of the craziness and attention and expectations that will come with being a Los Angeles Dodger. Maybe he saw the Blackfish documentary and does not want to be anywhere near SeaWorld in San Diego for how they treated those orcas.

Bowden's guess is as good as mine at this point. The Giants landing Sasaki would come as quite a shock given their farm system and the fact that the team does not have an overwhelming amount of talent. But then again, no one thought Corbin Burnes would end up with the Arizona Diamondbacks so unexpected things can happen.
