The 2026 MLB Draft is less than two months away and it will be an incredibly important draft for the SF Giants. They hold the No. 4 pick in the draft and one expert envisioned a way in which Buster Posey could create some chaos during the proceedings.
Many believe shortstop Roch Cholowsky of UCLA is the best overall talent in the draft. Most assume the Chicago White Sox will select him with the No. 1 overall pick but there have also been rumblings that he could fall a bit in the draft.
MLB Draft expert Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline spoke to Eric Cole and Adam Weinrib of FanSided on The Baseball Insiders podcast recently. They covered a range of topics but one part in particular has relevance for the Giants.
Giants could create chaos in the MLB Draft although it seems highly unlikely
“The one ‘chaotic’ thing you’re hearing is that, you know, Buster Posey and the Giants will do anything to get Roch Cholowsky,” Callis said.
He notes that the Patrick Bailey trade with the Guardians gave San Francisco more bonus pool money which could allow them to offer Cholowsky more money than the team’s ahead of them in the draft.
Still, Callis notes that it seems highly unlikely that the Giants will be able to get him since the White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Minnesota Twins would all pass on Cholowsky. Plus, Cholowsky is likely not going to go back to UCLA so his leverage is somewhat limited even if he wanted to play for the Giants.
Cholowsky is a Bay Area native as he was born in Vallejo and has said in the past he grew up cheering for the Giants and looked up to Brandon Crawford. He seems like a dream target so it’s not a surprise that people such as Bob Nightengale of USA Today have floated the idea that the Giants will make a big push to land him.
Posey went on KNBR yesterday in what was a pretty tense interview and was asked whether he thinks the extra bonus pool money could help the Giants land a player projected to go ahead of them in the draft. Posey said the bonus pool money thing is sort of “overblown” and that teams are usually going to pick the player they want without being too concerned about the money side of things.
Maybe that’s simply an honest answer from Posey and he doesn’t think there’s a chance Cholowsky will fall to them or maybe he’s playing some three-dimensional chess and is trying not to create more buzz about it while secretly trying to make it happen.
Many were surprised that Posey fell to No. 5 overall in the 2008 draft but that allowed the Giants to select him and that forever changed the trajectory of the franchise. Even if they miss out on Cholowsky they should still get a good player, maybe someone like pitcher Jackson Flora.
Yet, perhaps Cholowsky will fall just like Posey and the Giants can get him. With how badly this season has gone on the field maybe San Francisco is due a little bit of luck in the draft.
