Former SF Giants bench coach Kai Correa has a new job. He is leaving the Cleveland Guardians to be the new bench coach for the New York Mets. Gabe Kapler's right-hand man is developing a nice resume in the coaching ranks.

There was some thought that Correa could land one of the eight managerial openings across MLB, but ultimately he ended up getting the same job he had with the Giants.

Not only was Correa a bench coach for the Giants, he also was an infield instructor for the team and helped the team improve in some key defensive metrics while he was in San Francisco.

He took over as interim manager when Kapler was fired ahead of the team's final series of the 2023 season and even interviewed for the job. After the Giants went a different direction, he was hired by the Cleveland Guardians as a major league field coordinator and was promoted to director of defense, baserunning, and game strategy in 2024.

Many people are taking note of Cleveland's coaching staff after the success the team has had under manager Stephen Vogt the last two seasons. Craig Albernaz, another member of Kapler's coaching staff in San Francisco, is the associate manager in Cleveland and is another rumored managerial candidate.

Correa is building a nice reputation for himself. Where he has been success has followed. He was part of the coaching staff in 2021 during the miracle 107-win season for the Giants and he has been with Cleveland as they have won the AL Central each of the last two seasons.

At this rate, it would not be a big surprise if a more analytically-inclined front office decides to hire Correa as a manager if there is an opening in the next few seasons.

Meanwhile, the Giants continue their search for a new manager. Their reported favorite for the job, Nick Hundley, may now have an enticing opportunity elsewhere, but it is fair to wonder whether Buster Posey would be better served hiring someone with more experience.

Nonetheless, Correa has a nice new job and the Gabe Kapler coaching tree is still alive and well in the major leagues much to the chagrin of some, surely.
