Even Tony Vitello seems confused by SF Giants Opening Day do-over vs. Yankees

The SF Giants are set to play Opening Day today against the New York Yankees. Sure, they did face off against the Yankees on Wednesday for Opening Night, but the Giants are still choosing to refer to the team's first day game at home as Opening Day, much to the chagrin of our friends over at Yanks go Yard.

Even Giants manager Tony Vitello seemed a bit confused by Opening Day 2.0, telling reporters ahead of Friday's game: "The cool thing is we get a re-do, today is being called Opening Day again. I'll let our people explain that."

SF Giants skipper glad team gets another chance at Opening Day

The Yankees did indeed dominate the Giants on Wednesday, winning 7-0 as Logan Webb had a disaster of a start and the offense didn't do much of anything. But the game was just plain weird as it was broadcast on Netflix and had an odd start time. There were trolley cars and taxis on the field and it just did not feel like a normal Giants home opener at all.

Maybe I'm biased, but the only comedian who should be allowed to bellow into a microphone before a Giants game is Robin Williams, although some might disagree on whether Bert Kreischer is a comedian or not.

But Friday's game is a fresh start for the Giants. They will have the same lineup they used on Wednesday so hopefully the team can at least get on the board for the first time in the 2026 regular season.

They will be going up against right-handed pitcher Cam Schlitter who had a very solid 2025 campaign for New York. At least he is not a lefty like Max Fried, though. It seems the Giants' struggles against left-handed pitching have carried over from last season.

Robbie Ray will take the ball for the Giants. Ray was an All-Star last season but his numbers were much worse in the second half last season than they were in the first half.

The Yankees will have a slightly different lineup on Friday. Perhaps just to troll the Giants a little, they have first baseman Paul Goldschmidt leading off. Goldschmidt has torched the Giants in his career no matter which team he is on so do not be shocked if he does some damage against the Giants yet again.

It's Opening Day...again! Call it whatever you want, but maybe the Giants choosing to brand Friday's contest as Opening Day will give the team the fresh start it desperately needs after Wednesday's disaster.
