Well, there are worse ways to start a season...right? SF Giants ace Logan Webb had a disastrous start against the New York Yankees on Opening Night. Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow was calling the game on KNBR and posited a theory on why Webb got rocked so hard.

According to Dave Toebner of SFGate, Krukow said that he thought Webb may have been tipping his pitches in the second inning which is why they were able to score five runs. Webb has not commented yet on what went wrong in his start, but it will be interesting to hear his thoughts.

Krukow thinks Webb was tipping his pitches in disastrous start vs. Yankees

It's definitely possible that Yankees hitters knew what was coming in that second inning. Giants fans have seen Webb pitch a lot of games and it is really rare to see him give up that many runs in one inning. The fact that he gave up a lot of hard contact in the fifth inning as well may suggest that he wasn't tipping pitches since he seemed to be fine in the first, third, and fourth inning.

Maybe the Yankees just had a really good game plan going into the contest. They seemed to get a lot of hits on Webb's first pitch of the at-bat so there is also a chance that they were just sitting on something and got what they were looking for.

Also, Webb just may have not been at his sharpest. He left a lot of pitches out over the plate so he clearly was not his best and the Yankees, with their lineup full of great hitters, took advantage.

In all, Webb allowed seven earned runs in five innings of work. He allowed nine hits, one walk, and hit one batter. It went about as poorly as it could have and Webb has to be incredibly disappointed especially with the high hopes he has for 2026.

He had a similarly rough start in 2023 on Opening Day against the Yankees so let's just hope this is the last time in his career that he has to open a season against the Yankees.

Webb can at least say that he has started more consecutive Opening Day games as a Giant than Tim Lincecum and Bumgarner. Webb just made his fifth consecutive Opening Day start which is one more than the four straight that Lincecum and Bumgarner made.

Overall though, it was a tough night for Webb. Whether Krukow is right and he was tipping his pitches or he just wasn't sharp, or maybe some combination of both, he can only go up from here.
