Duane Kuiper still hopes to be alongside Mike Krukow for final SF Giants broadcast despite cancer diagnosis

As if this season couldn't get any worse for the SF Giants, legendary broadcaster Duane Kuiper announced that he was diagnosed with throat cancer. This comes a week ahead of Mike Krukow's final game as a regular Giants broadcaster.

Kuiper's full statement on the matter can be read below:

Kuiper says that he will miss Monday's broadcast as well as Wednesday's, but that he hopes to be in the booth on Tuesday and over the weekend as the team celebrates Krukow before he retires. It's just awful news and one can only hope that Kuiper gets well as quickly as possible because his plan was to continue broadcasting beyond this year even though Krukow is stepping aside.

Just so many bad things have happened for the Giants this season that it is hard to keep track. The team has been awful on the field and there have been so many injuries and controversies that it's almost amazing all of this awfulness has been jam-packed into one single season.

One can only be thankful that there is just one week left until it is over, but at the same time this sad announcement now makes us appreciate Kruk and Kuip even more. We always knew we wouldn't get to hear them call Giants games forever, but the fact that all of this has happened so suddenly is a bit disorienting.

Hopefully Kuiper can be alongside Krukow for his final Giants game

Based on Kuiper's statement, it does seem that he will try to be in the booth to call Krukow's final game with him on Sunday. One can only hope that he is well enough to do so, but it just wouldn't feel right if Kuiper was not alongside Krukow as he calls his final game.

These two guys have been the voice of Giants baseball for so long that it simply will not be the same without them. It's tough to even put into words what they mean to so many Giants fans but their friendship, humor, and knowledge of the game have made me a much better baseball fan for having listened to them call games for so long.

Here's to wishing Kuiper the speediest of recoveries and here's to hoping that he is healthy enough to be alongside Krukow in the booth on Sunday. They deserve that moment together and it simply wouldn't be fair if they were robbed of it because of health reasons.

This season has been dreadful but the Giants deserve at least one moment where things go as they should so let's all hope for the best with Kuiper after this brutal announcement.
