National broadcasts are throwing a wrench in Mike Krukow's SF Giants farewell

The SF Giants' season is almost over and that means we only get a few more weeks to listen to Mike Krukow call games as the primary color commentator for the team since he is set to retire after the end of this season. That’s why it is so egregious that the Giants have several games that are being nationally broadcast which robs us of a chance to hear Krukow.

Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres was on Apple TV and Sunday’s game is going to be on Peacock. Then, this upcoming Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers is going to be on Apple TV yet again. Thankfully the Apple broadcast this past Friday at least had Krukow come on for a few innings, but in an ideal world he would be calling as many games as possible so we can squeeze in as much Kruk time as possible.

After Sunday’s game, Kruk will definitely call the team’s final six games of the year which are all at Oracle Park and are not national broadcasts. There’s a chance he could call two of the team's games on the road against the Dodgers remotely the way he has in recent years where he stays in San Francisco while Duane Kuiper is at the game.

It’s probably unlikely that he will call the three upcoming games in St. Louis against the Cardinals so we probably have at least six games left with Kruk, and hopefully eight.

So, just a handful of games with the voice that so many of us have grown up just taking for granted. Maybe it won’t be the definitive end if he fills in at some point in the future or comes back for whenever Kuiper decides to retire, but it is still the end of an era.

It’s just so sad that we don’t have much more time left where Krukow is just a pretty regular part of our everyday lives. He’s been calling Giants games for 36 years and his voice is what we’ve all heard and have associated with Giants baseball.

No one will be able to compare to Mike Krukow going forward

It will be an impossible task to replace him, and whoever does end up taking over the bulk of his announcer duties is never going to compare. That won’t be any fault of theirs, it just speaks to how good Krukow has been for so long. 

Obviously, no one knew that Krukow was retiring when these broadcast decisions were made but it just stinks that these national games are robbing us of getting to hear Kruk since they were games he’d usually call.

Oh well. All we can do is keep on watching and make sure that we tune in to every single game he calls the rest of the way because we won’t get to hear that voice forever.
