Don't expect SF Giants to replace Heliot Ramos via free agency in offseason

With the SF Giants trading away Heliot Ramos and Harrison Bader crashing his scooter into a fire truck, two things that every fan could have predicted at the start of the season, a lot of young outfielders have gotten a chance to prove themselves.

While Ramos was a solid player for San Francisco at his best, providing power and offensive upside even if his defense was an issue, it already seems like the Giants have replacements for him in house and probably won’t be looking for a left fielder in free agency.

Turner Hill springs to mind as a player who has really stood out in his audition thus far. He is hitting .318/.411/.432 on the year so far. He’s only played in 16 games so perhaps we should not overreact to such a small sample size, but he looks to be a very solid contact bat.

Drew Gilbert and Jonah Cox have also impressed this year. It’s easy to see the two of them forming a platoon in center field next year assuming the Giants can void the rest of Bader’s contract or just end up releasing him.

Hill has looked good against both righties and lefties and his contact approach seems like it should be pretty platoon-proof, but the Giants could also have a platoon partner with him. Victor Bericoto did some impressive things before he went down with an injury so it’s easy to see him being a nice option to start against lefties.

Giants have even more young outfield options in the minor leagues

Even if these younger guys don’t all pan out, the Giants have other interesting options down in Triple-A like Scott Bandura and Bo Davidson. They’ve got a lot of interesting outfielders in the farm system right now so they should give the kids a chance to play especially when looking at the free agents who will be available.

Randy Arozarena and Seiya Suzuki may be the top two corner outfield options on the market. Both have a lot of power in their bats but we know the Giants will have to grossly overpay to lure any power bat to San Francisco so they are probably better served committing money to the pitching staff rather than the outfield.

The Giants need to give their younger players a chance to thrive and the fact that so many are showing promise this year should give the front office confidence to roll with those younger options in 2027.
