D-backs broadcaster calls out SF Giants for apparent lack of care amidst awful start

He makes a fair point.

The SF Giants are losing and it is getting ugly. They got walked off by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night and prior to the game, Diamondbacks broadcaster Bob Brenly called out the Giants for the optics of how the players are handling this terrible season.

Brenly, who was also a former Giants catcher back in the 1980s, said the following about the team: “I just see a lot of clowning... I saw Adames get picked off second base after goofing with Betts the entire at-bat. I see a few guys on your roster that maybe aren't totally plugged in when the game starts."

He’s of course talking about shortstop Willy Adames who forgot how many outs there were in a recent game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after he was hamming it up with Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts prior to the play.

It was unforgivable and Adames at least owned up to it after the game, but this is not an isolated incident. Adames hit a home run on Monday night and was seen laughing and yucking it up in the dugout even though the Giants were still losing by a lot and would go on to get blown out.

Willy Adames' personality is rubbing Giants fans the wrong way

That’s just Adames’ personality and the laughing and fun-loving spirit that manifests itself with Powerade baths and smiles can be endearing when the team is winning, but when the team is losing and doesn’t even look competitive all of the time that sort of behavior becomes grating and stands out to others.

Brenly is an old school baseball type so he obviously isn’t going to like that kind of behavior, but it seems many Giants fans are getting tired of it as well.

Whether fair or not, this is going to reflect poorly on manager Tony Vitello. There will be speculation that he has lost the clubhouse or that the veterans don’t respect him. Whatever it is it’s just a bad look for the franchise as a whole.

It really has to drive president of baseball operations Buster Posey crazy. He was a guy who did not like to fraternize with opponents and was not afraid to hold teammates to a high standard when he was a player so to see Adames doing that and making mental errors, especially when Posey’s first big move after becoming the head of the front office was to give Adames a franchise-record contract, a deal that doesn’t look so great right now, has to be infuriating.

Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow was also really critical of Adames’ mistake and said, “That's unforgivable, especially when you're seven games under .500."

Well, now the team is nine games under .500 and it sure doesn’t feel like things are getting better soon. It would be nice if there was a greater sense of urgency but that isn’t the signal being sent by Adames, one of the purported leaders of the team, and Brenly and others around the league are clearly taking notice that the Giants are losing and they don’t seem all that bothered by it.
