Buster Posey's warning seems to have scared SF Giants trade chips into better play

Wake up calls can come in many forms.

Ahead of the SF Giants’ series against the Atlanta Braves, several national reporters wrote that the Giants are open to trading away their players with long-term contracts like Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers as well as pending free agents Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray.

The timing of this did not feel accidental. The Giants were 29-43 at the time of these reports and were wholly a disappointment. It seemed pretty clear that this info came from the Giants’ front office and likely had president of baseball operation Buster Posey’s stamp of approval.

There could have been several motivations for this. Maybe Posey just wants to let teams know that the Giants are open and listening to offers. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will sell everyone off but those reports basically confirmed that pretty much everyone is on the table except for Logan Webb. Bryce Eldridge has to be another untouchable based on the way he’s performing.

It also could have served as a warning from Posey and the front office. They’ve tried everything else by calling up young players like Eldridge and Jonah Cox or trading away underperforming players like Patrick Bailey and yet the results have still been poor.

Perhaps this was the last thing Posey could do: make it clear that guys are going to be dealt if things do not turn around in the month and a half between now and the August 3rd trade deadline.

Giants look like a team on a mission in Atlanta

If that was the intended message, it appears it was received. Adames has hit two home runs during the series in Atlanta, Devers has three hits including a home run and a double, Arraez hit a home run, and Ray had his best outing of the year. Chapman went hitless in Atlanta but he has turned things around in a huge way as of late.

It seems these guys either really want to get traded and are trying to increase their value ahead of the deadline or they got Posey’s message loud and clear and want to turn this thing around and get back to .500 ahead of the deadline to prevent a complete fire sale.

Either way, it seems that Posey’s message worked. He’s not a player anymore so he has limited ability to influence what happens on the field during the season. It really seems like he lost this season before it even began by not investing in pitching during the offseason but it will be fascinating to see what he chooses to do in the next month and a half.

He showed last year he’s not afraid to get rid of key players like Mike Yastrzemski and Tyler Rogers when the team was underperforming. Those players were pending free agents so if the Giants are still well under .500 by August, Arraez and Ray are likely as good as gone and if things get even worse then the big three may be broken up as well.
