Buster Posey could land SF Giants' catcher of the future in 2026 MLB Draft

They obviously have a need.

The 2026 MLB Draft is roughly a month away. There’s been a lot of chatter about the SF Giants potentially wanting shortstop Roch Cholowsky to fall to them at No. 4 overall, but the odds of that happening seem fairly slim.

Recent mock drafts have them taking shortstop Jacob Lombard at No. 4 overall but one possibility many seem to be overlooking is the chance that catcher Vahn Lackey could fall to them.

It doesn’t seem incredibly likely as most mock drafts have him going No. 2 or No. 3 overall and one even has the Chicago White Sox taking him No. 1 overall. Basically, it seems like the first several picks are a bit more up in the air than some experts previously thought which could make things interesting.

Giants need a catcher of the future after Bailey did not pan out

After the Giants traded away Patrick Bailey, it’s now clear that they don’t have an obvious catcher of the future. Daniel Susac has shown some promise this season but he’s cooled down at the plate after a hot start. Jesus Rodriguez seemed like a potential option but his defense needs to come a long way before the Giants really trust him behind the plate which is why he was sent back down.

Eric Haase has been sharing time with Susac behind the plate and he’s shown off how much power he has in his bat but he is not a long-term solution back there.

Lackey could be that future guy the Giants are counting on. He just had a phenomenal season with Georgia Tech in which he slashed .397/.519/.772 with 20 home runs and 78 runs batted in.

He’s got a strong and accurate arm behind the plate and has also played third base so he’s got some versatility if it turns out he’s not best suited for catcher.

Lackey is a Georgia native and the Giants did pretty good when they drafted a catcher from Georgia back in 2008. Of course, they didn’t do quite as well when they drafted Georgia native Joey Bart, also a Georgia Tech product, back in 2018. Bart is now doing alright with the Pittsburgh Pirates but the Giants chose Bailey over him.

Maybe they’re due to hit on Lackey after Bart didn’t pan out. If he’s still on the board at No. 4 the Giants may have no other choice than to draft him since they have a clear need at catcher going forward.
