SF Giants fans have been losing their minds over the team’s handling of top prospect Bryce Eldridge. He is in the lineup haphazardly and there does not seem to be any sort of clear plan in place for his development. Eldridge himself seems confused.
In a recent USA Today article, Eldridge said the following to Bob Nightengale when asked about his playing time: “I guess I’m surprised, but it’s not my decision. It is what it is. You can argue every day that playing every day would be helpful, but I’m happy to be here. Obviously, it’s a little bit different, but this is where I’ve always wanted to be. I’ve just got to continue to earn my stripes here.’’

It just seems obvious that the Giants don’t know what they’re doing right now with Eldridge. It’s early enough in the season where they can talk themselves into clawing back into contention and from their perspective playing Eldridge every day and letting him work through his struggles would be admitting that this season is lost.
Eldridge is hitting just .143/.226/.250 with one home run and one RBI so it’s not like he’s hitting well enough to be undeniable the way that Casey Schmitt has. But one could argue that if he’s not given the chance to figure things out with consistent at-bats then his development will be impacted negatively.
Something has to give in order for Eldridge to get in Giants' lineup
There are too many infielders so it seems like the Giants are going to have to make a trade. Maybe they will part ways with Luis Arraez or Casey Schmitt or maybe Buster Posey will really try to blow things up and try to trade Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, or Rafael Devers to make room for him.
There are no clear options and there is seemingly frustration no matter how you slice it. Eldridge is frustrated he’s not playing. Fans are frustrated he’s not playing and the team is atrocious. All of this is going to reach a head at some point but until it does there’s going to be a lot of anger and consternation.
Eldridge will at least be in the lineup on Wednesday but we have seen before that even if he has a good game at the plate he may not be in the lineup the next day so he has to take advantage of the limited opportunities he has and hope that some rhyme or reason is applied to his development.
