Bob Nightengale's conflicting takes on SF Giants make absolutely no sense

There have been rumors swirling around the SF Giants the last few weeks, and they all seem to be coming from the same guy: USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale. The only problem is these rumors don’t seem to make much sense.

Perhaps rumor is not the right word. Conjecture or speculation may be more apt because no one is really confirming what Nightengale has been putting out there on the Giants.

Nightengale's Giants predictions do not make all that much sense

First, he claimed there’s a chance that consensus top pick Roch Cholowsky could fall to the Giants in the 2026 MLB Draft at No. 4 overall. No one else has thought that is very possible but he’s doubled down on it.

Then, he said that the Giants would “love” to offload the large contracts they currently have with players like Jung Hoo Lee, Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman. Again, no one else has reported that and it doesn’t seem like he’s basing that off any real source, he just seemed to be speculating based on the team’s poor start and the fact that several of those guys have been struggling.

Then, he appeared on 95.7 The Game and mused that there’s a chance the Giants could trade Bryce Eldridge since he’s not getting regular playing time right now and is getting inconsistent starts.

Well which is it Bob? Are they going to sell off the high priced players or are they going to get rid of their top prospect because they don’t have room for him in the lineup? It seems like he’s just flipping a coin at this point.

These different musings conflict so it seems pretty clear Nightengale is not basing anything he’s saying on anything he’s heard from sources within the organization, he’s just kind of publicly musing on things he thinks the Giants might want to do.

That’s fine. It’s his right to do that but it means we should really take the things he says with a grain of salt. Nightengale has a reputation for getting things wrong in the past so many are skeptical of the things he reports and says.

Maybe he’s right and Buster Posey will decide to just trade everyone and start over but something tells me that’s not likely especially since some of those high-priced players are starting to come around and the team is showing signs of life.

If the Giants do start struggling again though don’t be surprised if these musings and rumors come back. Ken Rosenthal and other national baseball media types are starting to turn on Posey and clearly aren’t the biggest fans of Vitello so if they smell blood in the water they are going to declare that the experiment with an unproven executive and manager with no MLB experience was a total bust. Let’s hope the Giants prove them wrong.
