The SF Giants are struggling mightily as a team right now and one player in particular who has had a rough go as of late is star third baseman Matt Chapman. However, manager Bob Melvin immediately shut down the idea of a day off for Chapman.

In a recent postgame presser following the team's loss to the Washington Nationals on Saturday, Melvin was asked about Chapman's struggles at the plate and whether they warranted a day off.

Melvin was pretty unequivocal about a potential day off for Chapman, saying, "No. He does more than swing the bat. He's a guy that plays great defense. He's a guy that we need in there every day. Everybody's going to go through some times where they don't swing it well."

In Chapman's last 15 games he is slashing .164/.266/.327 with two home runs and six runs batted in. For the season he is slashing .230/.338/.428 with 16 home runs and 44 runs batted in.

Chapman is a notoriously streaky hitter, so he may just be in a little bit of a rut right now. It is also possible he is still dealing with some lingering effects of the hand injury he sustained which landed him on the IL earlier this year and took him some time to come back from.

Still, Melvin is probably right to not want to give Chapman a day off. He does bring so much to the table with his Gold Glove defense at third and his presence on the field typically makes everyone around him better.

Earlier this season, the Giants did give shortstop Willy Adames an off day as he was struggling mightily at the plate. It took some time after that, but he has become one of the hottest hitters on the team over the last month so maybe there are benefits to a rest day even for players who want to be in the lineup every single day.

Nonetheless, do not expect an off day for Chapman anytime soon. With the Giants taking on the San Diego Padres seven times over the next two weeks they are going to need him out there as they try to cling to any sort of hope for the playoffs.
