When the SF Giants signed shortstop Willy Adames to a franchise record contract, there was probably no one happier than staff ace Logan Webb. That will certainly continue to be the case after Adames took Webb deep yet again.
At the team's spring training camp in Scottsdale, Adames hit two home runs off Webb in live batting practice. This was a day after Adames went yard on his second swing of live batting practice.
SF Giants shortstop Willy Adames continues to own Logan Webb
Adames has what we call ownage on Webb in his career. In nine plate appearances against Webb in his career, Adames has four base hits and two home runs. The most recent dinger he hit against Webb came last August when he was a member of the Milwaukee Brewers. It is no wonder why Webb said that he was thrilled the Giants signed Adames because it meant he would not give up any more home runs to him. Well, that turned out to be a bit premature.
Something tells me Webb is not too upset giving up batting practice homers to his new teammate though. Webb has struggled to get run support in the past so he will certainly love having a guy like Adames in the lineup who has hit 24 or more home runs in each of the last several seasons. He will also certainly love having a guy with the defensive reputation Adames possesses playing behind him in the infield. We know that Webb induces a lot of ground balls with his patented sinker so we are likely to see a lot of 6-3 putouts and 6-4-3 double plays which means Adames is going to busy out there at shortstop when Webb is on the mound.
While it would be silly to overreact to Adames hitting home runs in live batting practice before spring training games have even started, it is healthy to let our dreams run free for a little bit. We will have months and months to bemoan the Giants if they end up being as mediocre as they look on paper. Why not indulge our fantasies of Adames hitting 40 home runs and taking home an MVP Award for just a little bit?
Giants fans will be excited to see Adames in action in real games, and Logan Webb will be just as happy to see that so he can avoid giving up any more big flies to his new shortstop. He even replied to the post on social media of Adames taking him deep with a hilarious GIF with a quote reading, "Man, I'm glad I called that guy." We are glad you called him too, Webby.
