The SF Giants have gone cold with the bats in the last two games, getting shutout on both Monday and Tuesday. Perhaps it is a good thing that Barry Bonds was seen giving advice to Tyler Fitzgerald ahead of the game.
A video from KNBR shows the home run king with a bat in his hands taking his stance and talking to Fitzgerald. It sure would be nice to be a fly on the wall for a conversation like that. A young player like Fitzgerald must love having one of the greatest hitters to ever live at his disposal as he tries to get going after a slow start to the season at the plate.
Barry Bonds seen helping out young SF Giants hitter during BP
This is not a new occurrence to see Bonds helping out in the batting cage with the Giants. He did the same thing during spring training earlier this year and he also gave Blake Sabol a pointer that helped the backup catcher hit a pair of home runs back in 2023.
It is really cool that Bonds has not only remained involved in the Giants organization but has also maintained an active presence with the team and has not been afraid to help out younger players. He served as a hitting coach for the Miami Marlins for one season back in 2016. Now, he is sort of like an unofficial hitting coach for the Giants which is a pretty great thing for the team to have.
Unfortunately, Bonds' advice to Fitzgerald did not have an immediate impact as the second baseman went hitless on Tuesday. The team's bats have gone ice-cold so maybe they need Barry back in the cage with them tomorrow to tell them how to start getting the offense going again.
Fitzgerald looked a little like Bonds last year when he was red-hot at the plate. He became the first Giant since Bonds to hit a home run in five consecutive games. The 27-year-old has yet to hit a homer so far this year, but maybe Bonds' advice will help lead to his first homer soon.
Having one of the greatest hitters to walk the earth in Barry Bonds helping out is a great benefit for the Giants so let's hope we see even more of him hanging out at batting practice going forward.
