The SF Giants would be wise to look towards the future at the trade deadline given it’s been a rough season. They’ll surely acquire some prospects who can help out down the road, but they should also get some players who will make the 2027 team better.

Buster Posey has a chance to turn things around so he needs to be aggressive and smart when making deals this next week to put the Giants in a good position going forward.

Let’s take a look at six potential trade acquisitions who would help the Giants in 2027 and beyond.

Devin Williams

This trade might seem odd on paper since both the New York Mets and Giants are going to be sellers at the deadline, but maybe they could decide to swap bad contracts while they’re at it.

Devin Williams was viewed as one of the most dominant relievers in baseball just a few years ago with the Milwaukee Brewers, but since he’s come to the bright lights of New York City it’s been a different story.

He had a 4.79 ERA last year with the Yankees and this year he has a 4.54 ERA with the Mets. He signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the Mets ahead of the 2026 season, but maybe the Giants could maneuver some trade where they send Willy Adames to the Mets for Williams especially if the Mets choose to trade Francisco Lindor or Bo Bichette.

Marcus Semien could also be in the deal too to try to offset some money and the Giants would have to chip in some money to make it work, but they’d be offloading arguably their worst contract and would at least be getting a guy who has proven he can be an elite reliever in the past.

It’s not a super likely trade, but it would at least give the bullpen an intriguing arm who might be able to thrive far away from New York.

Adley Rutschman

Catcher is a need for the Giants since there is no clear and obvious catcher of the future. That’s why they should try to swing a trade for Baltimore Orioles backstop Adley Rutschman.

Now that Patrick Bailey is out of the picture they should make a run at him especially since Baltimore is in a position to sell and they are reportedly open to trading Rutschman.

He’s hitting .251/.331/.433 on the hear with eight home runs and 47 runs batted in. He’s currently on the IL which could complicate a trade but he’s under contract for 2027 so the Giants would at least get one year out of him and if they like what they see they could extend him and have their catcher of the future.

Ryan Zeferjahn

Los Angeles Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn is not set to be a free agent until after the 2031 season. He is 28 years old and has a 3.75 ERA on the season. He’s struck out 67 batters in 48 innings of work so he’s got good stuff and could be a key part of San Francisco’s bullpen going forward.

The Angels are a team looking for hitters so maybe the Giants would be willing to part with a promising young bat like Victor Bericoto to get a deal like this done.

Alex McFarlane

The Philadelphia Phillies seem like a natural trade partner for the Giants given their need for an outfielder. Heliot Ramos is a reported trade chip for San Francisco and maybe they could get Alex McFarlane as part of a package from the Phillies.

McFarlane just got called up to the big leagues from Double-A where he had a 2.06 ERA in 35 innings of work with 47 strikeouts and 12 saves. The 25-year-old could be a future closer for the Giants and will be under team control for a while so they should definitely go after him.

George Kirby

The Seattle Mariners are reportedly willing to trade from their wealth of starting pitching talent and George Kirby would be a great addition. He has a 3.57 ERA on the year in 19 starts and would be an immediate replacement for Robbie Ray who is likely to be dealt. Kirby won’t be a free agent until after the 2028 season.

Emerson Hancock

Hancock is yet another Mariners pitcher who could be had in a trade. He has a 3.16 ERA on the year and will not be a free agent until after 2031 so he could be a long-term piece of the rotation for San Francisco.

Acquiring these players would make the 2027 team better which is important especially since there is uncertainty about next season with the looming lockout.
