SF Giants linked to Phillies in a trade that would make way too much sense

The SF Giants sell-off ahead of the trade deadline is going to begin soon and San Francisco was just linked to the Philadelphia Phillies for a player that would make too much sense: Heliot Ramos. 

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Phillies scouts were watching Ramos during the team’s series against the Kansas City Royals so they clearly feel like he could be a good fit in the outfield.

Ever since the Phillies lost Adolis Garcia to injury earlier in the season they have been looking for ways to upgrade their outfield. They traded for Forever Giant Derek Hill who has played quite well but they probably want a real upgrade if they can get one to stay competitive in the National League East.

Ramos is an enticing piece for other teams for a lot of reasons. He’s a former All-Star with 20-plus homer power and he is not going to be a free agent until after the 2029 season. Getting a player like that who is under team control has to be appetizing.

He’s hitting .268/.304/.455 on the season with nine home runs and 31 runs batted in. Getting a guy like him who has power from the right-side would be perfect for the Phillies especially in their hitter-friendly ballpark. It wouldn’t be a shock if he hit 30-something homers in a full season with Philly.

What could the Giants get for Ramos in a trade?

Of course, the big question is what could the Giants get in return. Are the Phillies desperate enough for outfield help that they’d send their top pitching prospect Gage Wood? Probably not, but Buster Posey would be a fool to not at least ask Dave Dombrowski for him in a trade.

Maybe the Giants could try to get a young outfielder like Dante Nori or Gabriel Rincones Jr. in a trade or perhaps they could target a pair of pitchers like Jean Cabrera and Alex McFarlane. 

Another thing the Giants could try to do is send Harrison Bader along with Ramos. The Phillies have fond memories of Bader from last year and it would be nice for the Giants to get Bader’s contract off the books so it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

If the Giants do trade Ramos, the Phillies and New York Yankees feel like two very likely destinations because of their need for an outfielder. There’s a chance Ramos stays put if the Giants don’t get an offer they like but there’s also a decent chance he will be headed east soon.
