SF Giants manager Bob Melvin has had a long and distinguished coaching career. There are a number of players available in free agency who Melvin coached while he was the manager of the Oakland A's and the San Diego Padres.

The Giants have not been shy to reunite Melvin with players he has managed in the past through free agency. Last offseason, they signed Matt Chapman who Melvin was very fond of dating pack to their time together in Oakland and they also signed Blake Snell who Melvin managed in San Diego before the left-handed ace became a turncoat.

There are several players available in free agency who Melvin has managed in the past. Let's see if any of them would make sense in San Francisco.

5 players Bob Melvin has managed who could make sense on SF Giants

Jurickson Profar

Coming off an All-Star campaign in 2024, Jurickson Profar would be an interesting add for the Giants. His career-best 2024 season saw him slash .280/.380/.459 with 24 home runs and 85 RBI. It seems unlikely Profar can replicate that success in 2025, but he would be an interesting option in the outfield as a switch-hitter. He played under Melvin in 2019 with the A's and in San Diego in 2022 and 2023 so there is some familiarity there. He could make sense on a one-year deal for the Giants.

Ha-Seong Kim

We all know that Ha-Seong Kim has been connected to the Giants for a long time. The fact that the Giants are looking for a shortstop and want more speed on their roster makes Kim a very good fit on paper. If you add in the fact that he is good friends with Jung Hoo Lee and played under Melvin in San Diego, a deal between the two sides makes almost too much sense.

Frankie Montas

Turning to pitchers, Frankie Montas pitched for Melvin in Oakland from 2017 to 2021. He had some solid years with the A's including 2021 when he sported a 3.37 ERA in 32 starts and a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts in 2022 before he was traded to the New York Yankees. In 2024 he had a 4.84 ERA in 30 starts, 19 with the Cincinnatti Reds and 11 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He could be a potential mid-rotation option for the Giants.

Sean Manaea

Bob Melvin was the only big league manager left-handed starter Sean Manaea knew in his first seven MLB seasons, six of them with Oakland and one with San Diego. He also spent a year with the Giants in 2023 where he was arguably misused for much of the year as a reliever. He had a resurgent 2024 with the New York Mets as a starter, posting a 3.47 ERA in 32 starts and delivering some clutch performances in the postseason. He would make sense as a No. 2 or 3 starter in the rotation for the Giants, although he is likely to get a big pay day.

Mark Canha

Technically, Melvin already reunited with Mark Canha in 2024 after the Giants traded for him at the deadline. He played for Melvin back in Oakland so Melvin surely implored the front office to bring the well-liked veteran to San Francisco. He did okay with the Giants in 2024, hitting .288/.376/.329 with no home runs and 4 RBI. He could be a utility option for the Giants as a guy who can play first base, the corner outfield spots, and serve as a designated hitter against lefties.

Managers like having guys on their roster who they are familiar with, so it would not be a huge surprise if the Giants signed one or two of these players this offseason.
