Veteran SF Giants starter Justin Verlander has looked very good as of late. He has looked so good that there must be teams out there wishing they had swung a trade for the 42-year-old at the trade deadline.

The Giants reportedly made Verlander available ahead of the deadline, but apparently teams were not interested. This is not a huge shock considering Verlander struggled quite a bit in the first half of the season, but his recent form may have teams wishing they had rolled the dice on him.

3 teams kicking themselves for not making trade with SF Giants for Verlander

On the season, Verlander has a 4.29 ERA in 19 starts and 94 and 1/3 innings pitched. His last three starts have been great as he has gone five innings in each of them and has only allowed one earned run across that span.

His most recent start in Pittsburgh was very strong. His fastball velocity was the best it has been all season, but the Giants ended up blowing the game and costing Verlander a win in the process.

Let's take a look at three contending teams who wish they had called the Giants about Verlander and gotten a deal done.

1. New York Yankees

The New York Yankees made lots of moves at the trade deadline, including with the Giants for closer Camilo Doval, but general manager Brian Cashman admitted the team did not do much to address their starting pitching.

With the Yankees moving on from Marcus Stroman, they probably wish they had asked for Verlander in addition to Doval in that trade.

2. Houston Astros

The Houston Astros reportedly passed on trying to reunite with Verlander at the deadline. Verlander has had two different stints with Houston and helped them win two World Series titles.

Houston's rotation has had to contend with injuries so adding Verlander could have helped them on that front.

3. Detroit Tigers

Verlander could have also reunited with the Detroit Tigers potentially. Detroit is having a great year and does not have many weaknesses on their roster. They did swing a trade for veteran Charlie Morton who looked good in his debut with the team.

However, if Verlander ends up outperforming Morton the rest of this season, then Detroit may be wishing they had swung a trade for a different 40-something-year-old pitcher.

It is too late to do anything about it now, but these three teams could have some major regrets they did not add Verlander ahead of the trade deadline depending on how their seasons turn out.
