The SF Giants will have plenty of difficult decisions to make this offseason. However, there are a few players who feel like they will almost certainly be on their way out of the Bay Area. Here are three Giants entering their final month in San Francisco.
3 SF Giants who are entering their final month with the team
1. Justin Verlander
The veteran starter has actually been fine since his fifth start on April 20th. He has a 4.13 ERA in his last 19 starts, with a 3.61 FIP. Still, it feels like the writing is on the wall here. Since Opening Day of 2024, Verlander has a -0.4 bWAR, and considering the amount of money he's been owed over the past two seasons, it does not make sense for the Giants, or any other team, to take a chance on the future Hall of Famer.
He has had some cool moments in a Giants uniform, though. He recorded career strikeout number 3,500 at Oracle Park and just got his first career win at Oracle Park which led to a pretty humorous response.
Still, the Giants will probably look elsewhere to improve the rotation this offseason.
2. Wilmer Flores
Flores, who turned 34 this month, will be a free agent at the end of the season. He's bounced back from an atrocious 2024 campaign, but Flores still has not done enough to prompt the Giants to re-sign him to another contract.
After hitting six home runs and driving in 19 runs in his first 14 games, and hitting to a .929 OPS from March 27th through April 12th, Flores' season has taken a turn for the worse. Since April 13th, he has a .660 OPS.
The veteran provided clutch moments early this season and has endeared himself to fans over the years. It will be sad to see him go, but with all of the first base options the Giants will have next season with both Rafael Devers and Bryce Eldridge likely to be on the roster there just is not going to be room for him.
3. Andrew Knizner
The Giants backup catcher has struggled in his time in San Francisco. With -0.1 bWAR, a .465 OPS, and just 3 RBI, he has not pulled his weight for the Giants. He has only played 25 games with the team, but it is already clear that he should not return in 2026.
The Giants have yet to find a solid backup for Patrick Bailey which is a problem because Bailey's lack of offensive production is becoming a more glaring issue. Maybe Jesus Rodriguez could be a September call-up who ends Knizner's time with the Giants a little early.
The Giants will have a lot of returning faces in 2026, but do not count on any of these three to be back in San Francisco next season.
