Rosters will expand from 26 to 28 players in September. This means the SF Giants will have some decisions to make about which prospects they should call up. With a few new acquisitions from the trade deadline who seem to be MLB-ready along with their top prospect looming in Triple-A, it will be interesting to see who gets the call.
While top prospect Bryce Eldridge or former top prospect Marco Luciano would be the most attention-grabbing call-ups San Francisco could make, there are some more under-the-radar options for San Francisco to explore when rosters expand.
2 under-the-radar SF Giants call-ups when rosters expand in September
1. Blade Tidwell
Blade Tidwell was acquired from the Mets in the Tyler Rodgers trade at the deadline. In three starts with Triple-A Sacramento in August, Tidwell has a 1.69 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. Tidwell did have his struggles in the Mets minor league system, but his numbers are beginning to trend upwards.
Since the beginning of the season the Giants have struggled to find a consistent third-day starter. Landen Roupp has shown promise, but has been injured as of late. While showing flashes of his former self, Justin Verlander has been largely inconsistent.
Top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt showed some good stuff, but it's likely the Giants will limit his service days in order to maintain roster control down the road. Tidwell seems like a good option for a roster addition so the Giants can get a better feel for what they have with 24-year-old right-hander even though he is dealing with a shoulder injury.
2. Jesus Rodriguez
Jesus Rodriguez was acquired from the Yankees in the Camilo Doval trade. In 70 at bats with Triple-A Sacramento, the catcher is slashing .314/.392/.343 with a .735 OPS. The Giants have a defensive gem in catcher Patrick Bailey, but his hitting has been difficult to watch this season.
Bailey most likely is not going anywhere soon due to his defense and good numbers in high leverage. But Rodriguez could potentially see playing time with the playoffs likely out of reach for the Giants. With Doval continuing to struggle in New York, the Giants could see a big return on investment from Rodriguez.
With playoff hopes dwindling and the Giants having bolstered their farm system at the deadline, there is hardly a wrong move the Giants can make with the coming roster expansion. What they should absolutely not do is call up the in between players that we have already seen like Brett Wisely and Grant McCray. Instead, they should aim to figure out the value they have in guys who haven't gotten a chance yet this season.
