3 potential SF Giants trade candidates who are slumping at the absolute worst time

The SF Giants have a number of guys they can trade ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, but a few of their best trade chips are struggling at the absolute worst time. All three of these guys have had a rough go since the All-Star Break which might just harm their value a bit in the coming weeks.

Teams around the league are obviously looking at more things than a player’s stats right before the deadline but it certainly doesn’t hurt if a guy is red-hot and a team goes, ‘Wow it would be nice to have a guy like that on our team right about now.’

Let’s take a look at three Giants who might be dealt who are struggling at the worst possible time from the team’s perspective.

These slumping SF Giants are harming their trade value

Luis Arraez

While second baseman Luis Arraez was an All-Star and was clearly the team’s best and most consistent position player of the first half, the second half has not been as kind to him so far.

He has just three hits in 20 at-bats since the break and he had a very uncharacteristic two-strikeout game against the Seattle Mariners. He’s gone hitless in his last two games and he was even given a rare day off in the middle of the Kansas City Royals series. He even had an error in Seattle which is rare for the guy having a defensive renaissance. 

Maybe all of the trade speculation and uncertainty about his future has gotten to him just a little bit. He should bounce back soon enough but he hasn’t looked quite right in the last week.

Casey Schmitt

Probably the biggest All-Star snub for the Giants was Casey Schmitt. He had a phenomenal first half and trade speculation has swirled about him as well. He hit a home run in Wednesday’s contest to at least make things sort of interesting in the ninth inning but outside of that the second half has been a struggle.

He has four hits in 24 at-bats and has struck out seven times. We know Schmitt can be very streaky so this isn’t too much to be worried about but if he remains cold through the trade deadline maybe the Giants will hang onto him if interest dies down a bit.

Rafael Devers

Even if Rafael Devers was tearing the cover off the ball right now it would be tough to trade him with that huge contract, but his cold bat will make it nearly impossible to deal him.

He ended the first half red-hot but the break seems to have sapped his momentum as he has just three hits in 24 at-bats and has struck out 10 times. 

Arraez is still almost certain to be dealt soon so his struggles won’t matter that much and there’s a good chance Schmitt and Devers stay put. But if the Giants were entertaining a total fire-sale at the deadline then these struggles will make that hard to execute.
