The SF Giants are just trying to make it through the rest of this season which has seen so many players go on the IL and they just received another blow as ace Logan Webb was placed on the IL ostensibly with a finger blister which effectively ends his season.
It's not a surprising move especially since the Giants were openly mulling whether to shut Webb down after his last start. It's a very logical decision considering Webb pitched in the World Baseball Classic and went on the IL due to a knee injury earlier in the season.
He will finish the year with an uncharacteristic 4.31 ERA in 27 starts and 160 and 2/3 innings pitched. It breaks his streak of three straight seasons exceeding 200 innings.
One hopes that an offseason of rest will get Webb back on track and he will look like his usual self in 2027, but given how many injuries this team has sustained it's only fair to wonder what other players they should shut down the rest of this season.
3 other Giants who should be shut down with a week to go in the season
Landen Roupp
The only starter other than Webb still in the rotation from the start of the season is Landen Roupp. He has exceeded his career innings mark by a wide margin as he's thrown 155 innings this year. The Giants basically had to keep throwing him out there even though he had some elbow concerns last season, but at this point there is no logic in risking it especially since they will need him healthy for next year's rotation and have already seen Hayden Birdsong, Trevor McDonald, and Carson Whisenhunt undergo elbow surgery this year.
They can let other young arms like Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, Blade Tidwell, Cesar Perdomo, and Yunior Marte make some starts the rest of the year. Maybe they can even call up an arm from Triple-A to help them get through the rest of the season.
Jung Hoo Lee
While Jung Hoo Lee was arguably the team's hottest hitter a few months ago, he has really fallen off in the second half. He may be a fan-favorite but his numbers are not all that pretty as he is hitting .274/.317/.397 with nine home runs and 55 runs batted in on the season.
The team has a lot of young outfielders on the roster who deserve a look so maybe putting Lee on the IL for the rest of the season would be a good way to evaluate what they have with some of their younger options. Maybe it could even open the door for a Bo Davidson call-up.
Dylan Smith
The bullpen has not been very good this season for the Giants and president of baseball operations Buster Posey says it will be an emphasis in the offseason. One of the few bright spots has been Dylan Smith, but even he has really struggled as of late.
He seems gassed and manager Tony Vitello has leaned on him a lot, perhaps even too much one could argue, so the Giants should probably shut him down and call up another arm from the minors.
The Giants are just trying to get through these last few weeks and the only way things can get worse is if they lose another player to injury. Putting Webb on the IL is a smart move and these three players should be handled the same way.
