The SF Giants are off to a less-than-ideal start to their season. They’re below .500 and trying to get some sort of rhythm going. It’s easy to think everything is going wrong for San Francisco, but sometimes it’s worth taking a look around the league at former Giants who are struggling. Let’s take a look at three guys who were on the 2025 squad currently off to a bad start in 2026.
3 former SF Giants from 2025 struggling early in 2026Â
Mike Yastrzemski
Some fans were heartbroken when fan-favorite Mike Yastrzemski was traded last year at the trade deadline. He went to the Kansas City Royals and had a really solid showing there as he displayed his power after getting away from Oracle Park.
He earned a nice two-year $23 million contract from the Atlanta Braves in the offseason and based on how he looked in spring training it looked like he was about to go off. He was hitting homers and looked unstoppable down in Florida.
That success hasn’t translated to the regular season, though. Through 25 games, he is hitting just .198/.278/.259 with no homers. He’s at least got former Giant Dominic Smith to bail him out as Smith has been absolutely on fire for the Braves.
Justin Verlander
The Giants had to have been pleasantly surprised that they got 29 starts out of a 42-year-old Justin Verlander last season. It seems Verlander is not going to be quite so durable this season with the Detroit Tigers.
He's made just one start so far this season and it was not a good one as he allowed five earned runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. To make matters worse he went on the IL after the start with a hip injury. He's trying to get back but there is still no clear timetable for his return.
That's a less-than-ideal start for the veteran as he tries to prove he can still be effective and reliable at this stage of his career.
Camilo Doval
Like Yastrzemski, Camilo Doval was traded last year at the deadline. He went to the New York Yankees and struggled with them to the tune of a 4.82 ERA in 22 appearances. Those struggles have continued this season even though he looked good in the first series of the year against the Giants.
Doval has a 7.56 ERA in 9 appearances and 8 and 1/3 innings pitched. The fans in New York are relentless so if he does not get it turned around at some point they will always look at that trade as a mistake.
We'll monitor how these guys do throughout the year but so far the Giants probably aren't too upset that they're no longer in orange and black.
